Butterfly weed is probably the most popular milkweed in horticulture because of its bright orange flowers, compact stature, and less aggressive nature. Like other milkweeds it is extremely important for Monarch butterflies. This milkweed requires well draining soil and full sun, needing minimal maintenance once established. It is a tough perennial that will usually return year after year, though it may emerge late in the season so gardeners need to be patient. Its deep taproot makes it extremely drought tolerant.
