It's hard to think of a more versatile native vine than Clematis virginiana, or Virgin's Bower. It is our most widely distributed and vigorous Clematis, often seen climbing fences, trees and rock walls, or even just taller deciduous plants in meadows. It's easily recognized by profuse masses of delicate white flowers in summer, its charming foliage, and the distinctive, feathery seed heads that the genus is known for. Deer leave it alone, it is a pollinator magnet for many kinds of insects, and songbirds may use it for shelter.

This hardy perennial thrives in full sun to partial shade, and is a vigorous climber ideal for trellises, arbors, walls, and in meadows, woodland edges, or hedgerows where it can climb taller upright plants.

Cut-flower growers can make use of its vines in various stages of foliage, flowers, or seed heads.
