As its common name suggests, Bottlebrush grass, has some of the most distinctive seed heads among our native grasses. Early in the growing season, it adds an architectural element to our woodland understory with its brush-like, blue-green flower head. It tends to prefer soils that lean dry, and it is a larval host plant for a native butterfly species.

Plants are slender, not overly vigorous growers - they may self-seed a bit but will not crowd out other plants, making them ideal for woodland edges and gardens with some shade. This plant nevertheless can grow in sunny locations. We've successfully grown it in the field as an easy-growing, fall planted biennial.
