Swamp hibiscus, is a native plant that almost looks tropical but is hardy to zone 5. It thrives in moist conditions and produces some of the largest blooms of any native plant of the Northeast, in colors ranging from white to light pink. For a plant that dies back to the ground each year, it is an impressive grower, sending up stems as tall as 5'. This makes it ideal for a late season living fence. Great for pond edges, in rain gardens, bioswales or any areas that tend to be wet, though we've seen it growing happily in well-draining farm soils.
