Liatris scariosa var. nieuwlandii, commonly known as Northern Blazing Star, is a striking perennial wildflower native to dry prairies and rocky or sandy woodland edges in eastern North America. It does best with full sun and well-draining soil. Its distinctive purple-violet flower spikes open from the top down, which is unusual for spike-type flowers.

It is a pollinator magnet that adapts well to garden soils, provided that they periodically dry out and have full sun. Many pollinators, including Monarch Butterflies, visit these plants, and they make excellent cut-flowers.
