Panicum virgatum, commonly known as switchgrass, is a native warm-season perennial grass with ornamental appeal and ecological benefits to wildlife. This hardy, drought-tolerant plant thrives in diverse soil conditions and requires minimal maintenance once established. Standing 3-4 feet tall, it produces delicate, airy seed heads that transition from green to striking bronze hues in fall, and it stays erect during the winter, providing habitat as well as winter garden interest. Birds and other creatures will eat the seeds, and multiple butterfly species make it a host plant.

Because it spreads via rhizomes and can self seed as well, this vigorous grower may not be a good choice for small spaces. But it is beautiful massed in larger landscapes, is an excellent choice for meadows, and makes a great cut-flower grown as an annual, biennial, or perennial.
