Schizachyrium scoparium, or Little Bluestem, is one of our most popular warm season native grasses. It forms small, tidy clumps, sports unique, blue-green foliage that turns burgundy in the fall, and does impressive work for winter landscapes as its elegant, upright foliage and feathery seed capsules dry nicely and persist through the cold weather.

It is easy to grow and can self-seed but will not spread aggressively. It looks wonderful massed, and can handle some of the most forbidding, dry and rocky landscapes, making it a common plant for Prairie or other habitat restoration, as well as ornamental horticulture. It also makes a wonderful cut for flower arrangements.

What's more, Little Bluestem is the larval host plant for many butterflies, and provides food and habitat to many insects and songbirds. requires minimal maintenance and supports native wildlife while adding year-round visual interest to any landscape.
